Barbell Plate Calculator

Calculate barbell plate with your details.

Personalized estimate

Use realistic inputs for the most useful results.

What this calculator does

A barbell plate calculator determines which weight plates to load to reach a target weight. It subtracts bar weight, divides by two for each side, then identifies plate combinations.

How it works

Plates per Side = (Target Weight - Bar Weight) ÷ 2. Then match available plates from heaviest to lightest.

Formula

For 185 lbs on 45 lb bar: (185-45)÷2 = 70 lbs per side. Load 45+25 on each side.

Tips for using this calculator

  • Know your barbell weight—Olympic 7ft bars are 45 lbs
  • Standard plate denominations provide maximum flexibility
  • Budget plates may vary 10% from marked weight
  • Never mix 45 lb and 20 kg plates on same bar
  • Load heavier plates closer to center
