What this calculator does

An optimal sleep time calculator determines ideal bedtime and wake time based on sleep cycles. Each cycle lasts ~90 minutes, and waking between cycles (rather than mid-cycle) promotes alertness. Most adults need 5-6 cycles (7.5-9 hours).

How it works

Enter wake time or bedtime. The calculator works backward/forward in 90-minute cycles plus 10-20 minutes to fall asleep.

Formula

Optimal Bedtime = Wake Time - (Cycles × 90 min) - Sleep Onset (10-20 min). 5 cycles = 7.5 hours. 6 cycles = 9 hours.

Tips for using this calculator

  • Aim for 5-6 complete cycles (7.5-9 hours)
  • Account for 10-20 minutes to fall asleep
  • Maintain consistent sleep/wake times
  • Waking mid-cycle causes grogginess
  • Individual cycle length varies (80-110 minutes)

Frequently asked questions

Why do I feel tired after 8 hours of sleep?

You may be waking mid-cycle. Try 7.5 or 9 hours to align with cycle completion.

Is 6 hours of sleep enough?

For most adults, no. 4 cycles (6 hours) provides inadequate recovery. 7-9 hours is recommended.

What if I can't fall asleep quickly?

Adjust bedtime earlier if you typically take >20 minutes to fall asleep. Sleep hygiene practices help.
